The bright colored buildings of Burano - It is said that fishermen couldn't find their houses in the fog, so they started painting them different bright colors. Gina wonders if her HOA would allow her to paint her house bright pink if she said she couldn't find it in the sea of beige...
Wow moments in Burano and Torcello
While in Venice we spent a day touring other islands. Venice is actually one island among many in the lagoon. Lisa arranged for a private boat to take our group to the islands of Burano and Torcello.
Burano is known for brightly colored houses and lace. We took some time to wander the narrow passages and ended up finding some beautiful spots. We had a nice lunch and stopped at the lace museum. Some of the lace designs were so intricate we could hardly believe these works of art were made by hand.
Torcello is another island with a hidden beauty. The Byzantine mosaics in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Dell'Assunta are worth the trip. The Cathedral was built in the 7th century and the mosaics were added in the 11th. That is old stuff. There was a little house for sale on Torcello which made us ponder the idea of retiring to this beautiful country.
